I became a foreign film enthusiast years ago. There’s just something about watching the world through a different lens that really intrigues me. International film allows me to engage and connect with other cultures, languages, and experiences that I may never get to see in my lifetime. They also create a wonderful opportunity for me to dialogue with others about the issues in the global community. I want to share my passion with you and dispel some of the myths about subtitled films!
Zoe’s International Film Fete or ZIFF is a celebration of films from around the world.
I’ll share movie reviews as well as reviews of my all time favorites, many of which can be borrowed from your local library or viewed on most streaming services. My personal subscriptions include Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Eros International. The Film Movement is also a great club to join, although I’m not a current member.
When I share my favorites, I’ll also include discussion questions, ideas to make the most of your viewing experience, and tidbits about the film’s culture, language, food and etc.
You don’t have to watch these films alone, although streaming services makes that easy. Visit a local theatre that features foreign/independent film, host a foreign movie night, or attend an international film festival. Most major cities have their own festivals. Cleveland’s International Film Festival recently celebrated 40 years! If you’ve never attended one, you should consider it. It’s a wonderful way to experience foreign movies and gain exposure to new films on the film festival circuit.
I want to encourage responsible viewing and dialogue. If a movie contains mature content, I will let you know so you can decide if it meets your standard. NO PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIAL WILL BE FEATURED, HOWEVER MANY FILMS MAY CONTAIN MATURE CONTENT.
With all that being said, let’s widen our frame so that we can see more of the bigger picture.
Vive la filme international!
